Currently the League is:

1  Supporting the Herald Express Heart Appeal which aims to raise £500,000 towards the total cost of £1.5m to build a Chest Pain Clinic at Torbay Hospital. Such a unit is urgently needed and will:

  • Provide a self contained diagnostic and treatment centre for suspected heart attack victims
  • Relieve pressure on the Accident and Emergency department
  • Save patients having to travel to Plymouth for angioplasties
  • Provide faster reassurance for patients whose chest pain is not life-threatening
  • Provide swifter throughput of patients with greater efficiency and better facilities
We at the League of Friends have said that we will endeavour to match the money raised by the Herald Express, pound for pound, to their target of £500,000. If successful then between us we would raise £1m towards the total costs leaving the NHS to fund the balance.

2  Actively seeking new members.  Chairman Mike Evans has said that he would like to increase the present membership from its present level of around 1000 to 5000. He realises that this is an ambitious target and clearly it will need the goodwill and support of many people throughout the area and not just those who have had reason to be grateful to Torbay Hospital. Membership does not require any work, just a subscription of an amount of your own choice. To join please see the How to Help page.
